Tragedy After Thanksgiving Day: A Short Story

Improved Essays
In the fall of 2012, my family was unexpectedly faced with tragedy after Thanksgiving Day. On the day after Thanksgiving, my Father’s wife suddenly died after suffering from an aggressive but unknown infection. This event caused grief and frustration to build up on the inside as I struggled to find an outlet for several years. Four years after the death, a teacher was able help me find an outlet through the means of creative writing. In my Creative Writing classes, pent-up emotions were released as I had become more open to them, especially during the poetry units. Now poetry has not only become a means of expressing past feelings and hardships in a healthy manner, but a way to become a proficient writer.

The air sirens wail like spoiled children as the snowfall beats down from English skies. In the States, Oppenheimer and his constituents are drafting the first of many blueprints of a bomb that will eventually force the Japanese out of World War II. Several thousand miles away, church bells ring for my great-grandfather and his new wife in Italy. Just like Michael Corleone in The Godfather, he is wearing his military uniform. Since the beginning of my first year at school I have been learning to read and write. Throughout these years I have had a lot of experiences with reading and writing. All through high school we would write responses and essays over books we read. Once I entered college everything changed; I began to learn about writers and people who were known because of their great works of literature. In college, you are held to a higher standard and responsibility than you are in high school; this challenge has encouraged me to work hard and because of this I have become better at writing.…

Influences are something that every person has, whether it is purposeful or accidental. Influences are in everything, such as family and even work. In poetry, the author sometimes expresses their family dynamics through their writing, letting these dynamics shape not only their lives, but also their works. With some of these dynamics being from the Great Depression, these elements in Hayden’s works through his always working adoptive father, Clifton’s works through her deceased father, and Roethke’s works through his deceased father. Parents are the most influential people in a person’s life, whether it is in a good way or a bad way, and even if they are adoptive parents.…

I don’t know how I started writing in the first place. I still can’t quite believe I write. To this day, I look back to the past summer with a mix of wonder and disbelief, because venturing into writing has completely changed the trajectory of my life, when I signed up for my first writing workshop. I think luck might have been involved in this decision: truthless, ruthless luck. Somehow the planets were aligned the right way, and the right song was playing in my head, the wind was knocking right against the windowpanes, and I was right enough to click on the first weekly assigned reading and fall over, smack in love with the words of Ocean Vuong, or Terrance Hayes, or Toni Morrison.…

A fragile soul walks into his first grade class, fearful of the outside world. This is where he says goodbye, goodbye to his parents, goodbye to his old life, and starts anew. This is where the new world opens up new possibilities, new experiences, and new learning. There is no longer a necessity for childlike wonder; this is supposed to be the place where every child goes to create a name for themselves. The name I was trying to create for myself was Tyler Vold, a unique individual who desired to write with passion and attack the intricacies of the English language head on.…

We need to have some history of Thanksgiving in order to understand why thanksgiving is the way it is and why my family is not fond of the holiday. The Pilgrims, who had buckles on their hats and pants around their ankles, started this holiday we call Thanksgiving. They started it to have something to do on the last Thursday in November since football had not been invented during that time frame. At first, it was just a small gathering of Pilgrims and Indians and the sharing of a small meal around their rickety table. It proceeded to grow until the Pilgrims started shooting Indians.…

Freshman year, after moving from sunny Texas to the numbingly arctic Michigan, I became a little depressed. I used my homesickness for Texas to write my first poem, “Cold”, a piece on everything I missed about my old home. Writing became a natural outlet for all the complex emotions I felt, most beyond what I could comprehended at the time. At the suggestion of a friend, I started publishing my poems on my own blog. The topics varied from school stress relationship problems, to my dreams for the future.…

Emotional literacy, according to Claude Steiner, is “the ability to understand your emotions, listen to others and empathise with their emotions, and to express emotions productively.” In the same fashion, for me to consider myself to be emotionally literate is being able to cope with feelings and emotions in ways that can eventually help me help yourself and those around me. And oddly enough, I was only able to reach my current point in my literacy because of a whole separate person and a whole separate literacy. When I started my 8th grade year, I noticed a shift in my emotional stability.…

Poetry is pretentious. Or at least, that is the myth. Poetry in the twenty first century has not been a main platform for people – it seems that it is either too much work or impossible to decode. To me, poetry was always daunting. I was afraid that my emotions would overflow into a writer’s work, so I would not be able to understand the true intention.…
