Traffic Accidents In New Mexico

Decent Essays
Madam Chair, I reserve my right to yield the remainder of my time to our closing summation. As we are all aware, traffic accidents impact nearly everyone in our communities at some point during their lifetime. These traffic accidents can drastically and permanently alter the lives of innocent people, their families, and their friends. I trust that the thought of such horrors truly disgusts my fellow senators as they do I. In New Mexico, accidents such as these are especially a problem because of the thousands of alcohol related traffic accidents that occur every year. In 2014, 5.59% of all car crashes in the state were caused by a driver who was intoxicated at the time of the accident. Furthermore, over 50,000 DWI arrests were made in New Mexico in which the suspect was a third-time offender, and over 10,000 arrests were made in New Mexico in which the suspect was a fifth-time offender.

An Odessa man died in a one-car rollover accident on October 10. While rollover crashes account for only about 3 percent of serious auto accidents, they account for nearly one-third of passenger vehicle occupant fatalities. Because of this, it is important to know how to avoid a rollover accident as well as what you can do to increase your chances of surviving one. Any vehicle can suffer a rollover accident, but taller, narrower vehicles such as pickups, vans, and SUVs are more likely to be involved in a rollover accident because they are top-heavy. While this does not mean you need to stop driving your van, pickup, or SUV, it does mean you should avoid putting excessively heavy loads on the roof.…

As a new driver in Louisiana I've noticed two major things. Number one that car crashes occur often and number two that insurance is extremely and unnecessarily high. The number of car accidents in Louisiana 2015 was a jarring number of 168,407 and 757 of those car accidents being fatal according to LSU's research data. (Dr. Schneider 2015). This seems like a result of major budget cuts to the traffic division of New Orleans police department where there were only 32 officers employed in this division at the time.…

In the United States, where drunk driving is among the most common types of arrest made by police, the number of alcohol-related crash deaths is roughly the same as the number of homicides. In addition, vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death in young people ages 15 to 20; many of these are alcohol-related”(Center for Problem). Not all of the accidents are tied into drinking and driving, some of the traffic accidents that have caused death in the past, mainly for teenagers, were speed racing, speeding, hit-and-run crashes, aggressive driving, or even driving with a revoked or suspended license. Here are some examples of what harm drinking and drinking could cause, anything from car crashes too getting a very pricey ticket: “drivers, passengers, and pedestrians are killed and injured.…
