Traditions In Amy Tan's 'Fish Cheeks'

Have you ever wondered how other countries are celebrating the same exact holiday as you are? Well in “Fish Cheeks” the mom invited over a family for a Christmas Eve dinner. The main character was not happy about them coming over because she wants to be like all of her friends and doesn’t want to be different. “You want to be the same as American girls on the outside. But inside you must always be Chinese” (Tan). Just because the Chinese Christmas Eve is different from the American Christmas Eve doesn’t mean its not celebrated wrongly. The Chinese New Year and the American New Year are perfect examples of the same holiday celebrated differently, but still equally as important.

Most of the Chinese people get off work on New Years Eve to the sixth day of the Chinese New Year. This holiday is always celebrated with their family. Everyone in the family is expected to be around a round table eating the most important dinner of the year, the Reunion Dinner (Annie Wu). It is a tradition for families to make dumplings together because they say “it brings good fortune to the household”. Chinese families also eat long noodles and say “if you want to live a long life don’t cut the noodles while eating them”. For the Chinese New Year almost everyone does the exact same thing; they decorate, watch a special show, and even attend the same events (History.com). Having plants in the house is very important because it symbolizes regrowth and a new growth to a new year. (Web.uvic.ca). A lot of families watch CCTV New Year Gala while eating dinner. Staying up till midnight and going to listen to hear the New Year bells is a very common thing to do in China. Most of the Chinese population will go to large squares or temples. The Chinese culture believes the bells bring good fortune and drive away all the bad luck (Annie Wu). The American New Year is very popular, but there aren’t as many traditions or customs as there

The Cultural Revolution led to the loss of Chinese culture and all connections to the West. Li says of his family’s New Year’s customs that “Before Chairman Mao and the Cultural Revolution we would have displayed a family tree and a picture of the god of fortune on the northern wall above the table. But this tradition was now considered a threat to communist beliefs. Any family doing this would be regarded as counter-revolutionary, for which there were heavy penalties, including jail” (39). The practice of traditional ceremonies or the suggestion of any Western influence in the home would have resulted in the punishment and rehabilitation of citizens who did not abide by the Communist way of life.…

Tofu, which looked like stacked wedges or rubbery white sponges. A bowl of soaking dried fungus back to life… and a plate of squid” (Tan 117).…

Reading Amy Tan's "Mother Tongue", I came across the idea of language being "fractured and broken". In the essay, she provided examples of how her mother's limited English caused her to be given poor service at department stores, banks, and restaurants; stating how people would usually consider a lack of depth in their thinking due to their "broken" or "limited" use of language. Conversely, she thinks that her mother's English is "vivid, full of observation and imagery". Indeed, Chinglish is what creates meaning for the speaker and highlights the emotional viewpoints of the native tongue, despite it being the literal translation of a Chinese saying (which makes it grammatically incorrect with funny pronunciations and deemed as a form of "broken…

A bowl soaking dried fungus back to life. A plate of squid, their backs Crisscrossed with knife markings so they looked like bicycle tires"(Tan, pg.117-118) shows that at first she was embarrassed with the food her mother made, but at the end of the story the author says, "for Christmas Eve that year my mother had picked all my favorite foods. "(Tan, pg.118) later we find out those foods were her favorite which I thought that's pretty ironic making your favorite foods sound terribly disgusting. This is where the story shows the reader that one should not care how other view you it only matters on how you view yourself. For my first presentation, I chose to go over polygamy courtship and marriage by Kiersten Warde. Polygamy varies from your typical relationship in that it is a marriage involving one man and multiple women, like stated in the presentation, polygamy in Greek translates to “often married”. While this practice is illegal in the United States, it is still practiced in other places around the world today. Although, even in places where polygamy is accepted the man is truly only married to his first wife, the others are only bonded spiritually. Having many children is important to this practice, it is believed that the more children a man fathers the closer he is to God, which is achieved by having multiple children with multiple wives.…
