Zero Waste Initiative

The traditional initiatives for minimizing wastes of materials in construction focus on avoiding and reducing the waste of materials, and the hazardous and dangerous materials and products used to be disposed (Tom 2012). Traditional initiatives operate completely depending on priority in the Waste Management Hierarchy. Pittwater council (2009) had given a flow-process diagram to result in minimizing waste of materials in construction and Tom (2012) followed and provided detail processes. Primarily, one of the most significant methods to avoid wasting is ordered as precisely as possible the number of materials needed in construction. Secondly, job-site sorting and storing are also important. A great protection provided in the storage of materials …show more content…
Compared with the difference of inclusions of organic materials, the strategies and legislation of different states affected the recycle rate much more significantly. For VIC, WA, SA and ACT, they have strategies similar or same as ‘Zero Waste Policy’ mode. Zero Waste initiative intends to pay more attentions to reusing and recycling to reduce the disposal rate of wastes. Compared to other initiatives, cyclical flow shown as figure 3 (Curran & Williams 2012) is being emphasized and developed by Zero Waste initiative in every …show more content…
Hence it has a fundamental strategy that to hold level the total waste generated first then increase recovery and use of materials from the construction and demolition sector from 65% (in 2000) to 76% (Hyder Consulting 2009). At the same time the government encourages the improvement of sustainable materials and learning of sustainability in schools. In Queensland, the vacant of effective policy caused 30% of recycle rate in 2006/7. Therefore QLD released a new strategy of waste materials to establish a more effective policy framework and more accurate system of data collection and analysis in 2007. And QLD has same strategy as NSW to reduce waste and optimize resource recovery and strengthen sustainability realization and behavior. Tasmania hadn’t clear and specified strategies of C&D waste management in 2007 to reply to the 0% recycle rate of C&D wastes. At the same time, Northern Territory started to set up a system of ‘Zero Waste Policy’. Further more, there is a special example in states which was using ‘Zero Waste Policy’, Western Australia. WA only had a recycle rate 17% with strategies and policy such as ‘Zero Waste Policy’, tight links to local governments and increasing landfill levy from 1998. The long distance for transporting the C&D wastes from site to recycling industry is one of the vital

Biodegradable waste like yard waste can be collected in a large land field and decomposed using modern facilities and used to manufacture compost which can be sold to farmers for planting. This implies that biodegradable waste can be recycled for other uses unlike non-biodegradable waste like plastics. On this note, Bill Nye advocates for the use of more biodegradable products and recycling of non-biodegradable waste so that the environment is saved from pollution. The non-biodegradable wastes liked papers and plastic bottles can be done away with by reducing, reusing and recycling them as the video states. The non-biodegradable should be dumped in a central place like bins in cities where they are collected in huge garbage trucks which transport them to recycling facilities.…

From survey results, Warringah Council has a decent recycling program as residents are environmentally conscious and use common sense. It would be advantageous for Warringah Council to create a decade long plan outlining improvements needed. Some proposed recommendations below were based on results gathered in the questionnaires. • Introduce fines for more than 20% of raw materials are in general waste bin. This would deter residents from discarding everything into general waste and encourage them to further sort their waste correctly.…

Minter highlights the good fortune of those who have made it big in the scrap trade as well as revealed the grime that comes with trading trash. Ultimately, the extensive exploration into the scrap industry sheds light on the lesser known global recycling industry and redefines “reduce, reuse, recycle” with a deeper meaning. Most Americans throw away their recyclables into their blue and green bins, not giving any second thought about where they go. I, admittedly, was a mindless recycler until I read Junkyard Planet. The impact that recycling has on my daily life was not something I thought about often until Adam Minter had…

Recycling involves using selected materials from garbage in the manufacture of new products, rather than burying the garbage in a landfill. Recycling saves energy and natural resources but not all sorts of plastics can be recycled, leading to a waste of time, money, human and natural resources. It’s better to throw away your trash rather than recycle it because machines cannot sort all types of plastics and plastics that can’t be sorted end up in landfills. Economically, America’s recycling rates are proven to be very low and only few recyclable materials are actually recycled properly.…

Imagine if almost everyday, twenty-four 10-gallon garbage bags were thrown into your home. By the end of nine months, just under 5,000 garbage bags would occupy and overrun the place you live. This same careless and excessive wastefulness is exactly what Davenport North is doing in the lunchroom every day and every school year; the earth is our home and we are absentmindedly throwing our trash all over it. Actions like these contribute to the existing problems of landfill overflow, greenhouse gases, and environmental danger. In an attempt to reverse these problems, a reduced waste system should be implemented at Davenport North due to the irresponsible waste and its impact on the environment.…

Disposal of solid waste is a major environmental problem in America at present due to the large increase in its population, and it will be become more of an issue in the future if Americans do not deal with the problem. Waste disposal involves a system that manages waste from its origin to its final disposal. The forms of waste management include incineration/burning, burial at landfill sites or discharge at sea/lake/river, and recycling. According to Michael Armbrister’s article “Solid Waste Disposal in Southwest Virginia: A Regional Solution,” “The United States alone produces more than 230 million tons of solid waste a year.”…

There is one planet that is inhabitable, so as humans we should do everything in our power to make the Earth sustainable. As many think recycling promises a brighter future for our planet, they are quite frankly being deceived. We are more likely to drive ourselves into the ground by funding recycling than to just leave the garbage to, quite literally, rot in its own filth. To some people recycling is just a lost cause, but to many others’ it has wedged its way into becoming a part of his or her lifestyle.…
