Shakespeare shows this I'm plenty of ways but the most notable one is Hermia not doing or listening to what her father tells her to do. In Midnight summer's dream Hermia is faced with a very difficult situation she loves Lysander and Lysander loves her but Demetrius loves Hermia as well and Hermia's father favorites Demetrius so he wants Hermia and Demetrius to wed, but Hermia is not in favor of this so she has the options to marry Demetrius, be a non and be single forever, or so be killed. She decides that she is going to run away with Lysander. This whole situation is against traditional gender roles because in the first place Hermia should listen to her father and marry Demetrius. Women do not have a say to who or what they want when a man gets involved especially her father or someone they have to respect and look up to.
