The first book ever printed was “The Bible (Kreis)”, which lead religious leaders to fear that people might actually think they could read and interpret the bible for themselves. Soon after the Bible became popular, people decided that if one could actually read and interpret it, then it would be more helpful than not. In the year 1440, the printing press was invented in the Holy Roman Empire by the German Johannes Gutenberg, based on existing screw presses. The widespread of the printing press was one of the most influential events in the second millennium. Naturally, when the invention of the printing press revolutionized the written word, some people feared that the tradition of reading books would become unpopular, and that an exquisite art form would be forever lost, but it actually had the opposite effect. For hundreds of years people have been documenting their works through bounded pages known as books. While readers take pleasure in cuddling up with an intriguing book and forgetting all of the troubles of life, one can dive into the adventures of a person other than his or herself. An advantage of reading is where a print book can take a person’s mind. Reading can take a person into times of war and famine, to faraway lands of kings and castles, knights and dragons, or even to historical events. Another advantage is that the books have historical gravitas. That is, when someone picks up an older book and reads it, one could get a sense of connecting with the author of the book. A third advantage of print books is the many conversations that can be shared from just one book.
