At the time of the story, the population of the village had grown; they needed to use something that could fit in the black box(the box that contained the slips of paper). The black box is a metaphor for the villagers’ connection to tradition, the people didn’t want to “kiss goodbye” the tradition of using chips of wood. The younger people in the lottery refused to do these traditions, but they were forced too; consequentially, they knew that the practice of the lottery was deleterious to the overall well being of the people. Older generations have a hard time coping with technology. They see it as a form of laziness. They believe it is wrong because they aren't used to it. The younger generation views technology as normal because they have grown up with it. The people are worried about their traditions, but they are too afraid to change the traditions for the reason that they never thought about how their lives would be if they stopped or changed these traditions. Old man warn said that the young folks want to change what we have and they want to take the easy way and he has lived with it. This relates with today because now the young folks have tech the nology and the old people or the people who haven't grown up this technology would say the same thing they would say they young folks want the easy way out this
