Traders Den: A Short Story

The next morning was dry. Rey woke late, the sun was blinding, penetrating the small holes in the roof of her low shelter.
Stepping out with her still-bloody robes, Rey shielded her eyes from the blinding sun. Looking over the edge of the high dune that her camp is situated on, she remarks,
“No clouds in sight, it’s gonna get hot today!”
With her goggles toning down the bright sun, Rey hobbles down the dune and heads west towards Traders Den. Following the indent from an ancient crash, the scavenger tries her best to keep out of the sun. Coming upon a commonly used trail to Traders Den, Rey checks for fresh tracks. Finding nothing suspicious, she starts down the track north.
The trip was uneventful and Rey could now see Traders Den in the distance; it's great entrance crawling with merchants, scavengers and smugglers alike.

The shank sinks into the sand as the scruffy man throws a punch with his offhand. Rey’s newfound ally catches the fist and crushes it in his own, making the shaggy man wince. With one swift movement, the bearded male bashes the shabby man's nose with his own fist. Rey’s predator, clearly unmatched, attempts to worm away, but before he can move a muscle the hairy man headbutts him, his body crumpling to the ground.
“Aye lass you shouldn’t be traveling alone. Scum like that’ll eatcha fer breakfast. Literally”. “I’ll be fine.” Rey states plainly as she steps over the unconscious man, picking up the blade before anyone knew any better.
“Aye lass, name’s Seamus. Seamus Quinn at yer’ service.” The bearded man persists.
Wishing the man would leave her alone, Rey ignores him. Getting to the front of the mob (with Seamus in tow), Rey reaches the teller, a fat bald man on a high stool. “Welcom’ ta da city. Ya ‘ave a pass’ or ya wishin’ ta purchas’ one”?
“Umm…” Rey paused, as not having money meant she wouldn’t be able to purchase a

Though, close in distance, Sailor Rock was much harder for Greg to get to from the north side, rather than the dirt road they had always used from the west. Limping uphill on one leg with a crutch and maneuvering through rocky and uneven ground, was difficult enough, until he had to pick his way through the prickly bushes and small trees where the ground leveled near its base. Since he couldn’t go very far without elevating his leg, it took him two full days to finally get there. The wild plums and berries he found along the way kept him from starving, but it didn’t give him enough energy to climb to the top and for his body to heal. What happened to the well-worn trail that opened up to the clearing at the base of Sailor Rock?…
