Abstract
THE ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR OF FOOD RETAILER TRADER JOE’S IS UNIQUE IN MANY WAYS. FROM OWNER, JOE COULOMBE, TO A STORE CLERK, THEY ALL HAVE THE SAME VISION IN MIND- TO SET THEMSELVES APART FROM THE REST. NOT FALLING INTO STEREOTYPICAL FOOD CHAINS, TRADER JOE’S DOES BUSINESS THEIR WAY. THIS MAKES THEM PERFECT AT BEING THEM. FROM INTERVIEW QUESTIONS TO JOB DESIGN, THEY ARE NOT YOUR STANDARD FOOD MARKET. THE SOCIAL CAPITAL IN WHICH MANAGEMENT IS CHOSEN, TO THE STORE’S ATMOSPHERE AND POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT FOR ALL EMPLOYEES ARE HAVE A PROVEN TRACK RECORD OF SUCCESS. They are encouraged to be social, to interact with customers, fellow employees to gain knowledge about products and services. Human capital is a cornerstone to the success of the company. However, not everything in Trader Joe’s world is perfect. Greenpeace released a scorecard stating that the food retailer sold 15 of the 22 red-list seafoods. Red-list seafoods are those that are overfished and in order to ensure their survival need to be conserved. Greenpeace even launched a web-site named Traitor Joe’s. Trader Joe’s response to Greenpeace’s negative campaign does demonstrate contingency thinking due to their swift response and correction no matter the cost. I believe based on the importance they have shown in the area of human capital, profitability is not what drives the company. It comes down to ethics, the right thing to do no matter the cost for the customers and the environment. They have a proven track record of doing the right thing, why would this circumstance be any different? Is Trader Joe’s a management benchmark for other to follow an in what areas relevant to Organizational Behavior does the firm have an edge on the competition?
