Unlike most other intellectual property, trademarks primarily aim at preventing unfair competition between parties within a particular market. Because trademarks aim at preventing unfair competition, trademark owners must inform buyers in the market about the trademarked goods and services, however trademark laws forbid certain kinds of appropriation of a trademark. A trademark is an identifiable word, symbol, design, or a combination of these elements, which identify and distinguishes goods and services. In addition to the elements that make up a trademark, trademark law encompasses similar identifiers of origin such as collective marks, certification marks, trade names, and trade dress protects an organization or legal entity. Webpages are found and electronic mail (e-mail) are found through the use of domain names, therefore, without a domain name, a computer would not know where to look for a particular webpage, and e-mail server would not know where to send e-mail. However, domain names are more than just addresses, since they can be selected by an “addressee” and are closely associated with a particular product or service.
Qualified domain names are divided in to hierarchies. The top-level of the hierarchy appears after the last (‘.’) in the domain name. The top-level domain name is .COM. The .COM indicates a domain name that is owned by a commercial enterprise, and is the most common top-level domain name. Other popular top-level domain names are .ORG (for non-profit organizations), .EDU (for educational institutions), .GOV (for government entities), and .NET (for network and Internet related organizations).
In addition to the top-level domain names, each country is assigned a unique top-level domain name. For example, .UK identifies a domain in the United Kingdom. Although there is a .US top-level domain name, most organization within the United States outside of state and local governments opt for one of the generic top-level name (i.e., .COM, .GOV, .ORG), which are available entities in any country through the
