Tracy K. Smith is a poet, and she is the 22nd poet laureate of the United States. Carla Hayden appointed Smith a second term as poet laureate. Smith does not like how America has divided into two regions: urban and rural. Although she is from the urban region, she wants to discover solutions for the rural region. When Smith was in South Carolina, she met different people that were apart of segregation. Furthermore, she felt overwhelmed by two poems during her time visiting rural areas. The first poem is about childhood, and the second poem is about addiction in a family.
