When I moved to Worland, I was still being pushed to do track in the back of my mind because of that conversation. I had told my parents the thoughts I had about running before we had moved. Even after we moved they still thought it was a good idea. They thought it was even a better idea after we moved because they wanted me to make friends. When I first went to Worland High School with my mom to enroll for my classes, we talked to Mr. Clark about the extracurricular activities I might be interested in being a part of, so my mom mentioned track to him. He told us about indoor track, the season was just starting up. I made the decision in not going out for indoor track because I thought it was just too early, and I wanted to get used to everything else first. But by the time it came to the outdoor track season, I didn’t have many friends still, and some of the people who I got along with were doing outdoor track, so I finally decided that I would go out for track. Also, my parents were quite worried about me not being sociable enough since we moved, so they were very strongly “encouraging” me to do track. My choice to go out for outdoor track was influenced greatly by my experience of moving, and needing something to make me myself

When I was very little, walking up the trail with a pack on my back and the dog at my side, I would reach out and pull leaves from the bushes and trees. I would tear off corners, smooth the edges, and they would be turned into spaceships, flying across a lush alien world. Sometimes the trail, worn down into the ground over time by paws and hooves, would climb its way up onto the crests of ridges and meander across the moist, mossy fringes of muskegs. The rough, black and gnarled spruce branches that grew there were pirate spacecraft, pursued by the sleek birch branches from beyond the muskeg's soggy borders. As imaginary lasers and rockets exploded against the ships' hulls, I would rip off little pieces of bark and let them fall to the forest floor.…
