Tracey Emin is an English contemporary artist known for her autobiographical and confessional works. Emin was born on July 3rd, 1963, in Croydon, South London, England to Pamela Cashin, and Enver Emin. Tracey grew up in Margate, on the coast of Kent, alongside her twin brother Paul. During her early childhood, Tracey lived with her brother and her mother in the successful seaside hotel that her father owned. Her father lived at the hotel only half of the time; they soon found out that the other half of his time was spent with his other wife with whom he had three other children with. Shortly after his secret life was discovered, he deserted Tracey’s family to live a new life with his other family, taking all of their money and savings along with him. Emin’s mother was left bankrupt forcing her and her children to live in conditions of extreme poverty. Her childhood was promptly swept away by poverty, abuse, and trauma.

In 1980, Emin left her home in Margate to study fashion at the Medway College of Design where she studied at until 1982. It was at Medway College of Design where she met and dated Billy Childish, an avant-garde writer. Emin worked alongside Childish and eventually became a member of The

Emin embroidered names of people she had simply slept next to, like her mother, grandmother, brother, close friends, etc. In this piece, Emin implements various elements including line, plane, mass/volume, space, texture, time, and color. The most prominent elements to me would include mass/volume as it is a life-sized piece, texture, because embroidery has a very specific texture that contrasts to the fine stitching of the fabric of the tent, and color, as all of the names embroidered into the cloth are done so in a whole array of different colors that stand
