Arlene served the town of Newcastle in many ways throughout her life. For almost 50 years, Arlene has served the town as ballot clerk. On March 20, 1967, Arlene was sworn in as the Republican ballot clerk by Mildred Cote, the town clerk at the time. Arlene has also held the position of deputy warden and registrar of voters.

“She is very dedicated to what she does and keeps everyone on the straight and narrow. Even if she has known you your whole life, she’ll ask you to state your name on election day.”
Arlene also serves as the museum curator and society historian for the Newcastle Historical Society, which was established to preserve the history of the town for future generations. Arlene was one of the members on the organizational committee that formed the historical society in 1998.
The selectmen later appointed Arlene as the society’s first secretary, a position she held for many years.
Arlene has also documented the history of Newcastle in two books, “Between Two Rivers,” which was written in honor of the town’s 250th anniversary in 2003, and “History Tales of Newcastle, Maine,” a compilation of articles Arlene wrote for the “Newcastle History” column in The Lincoln County News.
Arlene has also dutifully recorded daily weather observations for more than 50 years, starting from when she lived on a farm in Jefferson. In 2012, the National Weather Service presented Arlene with the Thomas Jefferson Award, the service’s most prestigious award. Only five of the service’s 11,000-plus cooperative weather observers receive the award each
