Town of Settlers
I believe that life is about perspective - about exploring, questioning, and discovering the good this world has to offer. The environment in which a person grows up can and does have a profound impact on this perspective. I am living proof of this. Because of my experiences in my small hometown and my family’s support and encouragement to look outside the city limits, I am inspired to strive for my aspirations no matter how challenging they might be.
Hallettsville, population 2,598, is considered by some to be one of the best places to raise a family. A small town with a low crime rate, minimal traffic, and only two high schools - my hometown is the definition of a tight-knit community. The values and lifestyle of my small

But more than anything, my family has been the true community which has inspired me to think more of myself and my future. I long to experience different cultures and learn from the people. My mother, a true northerner, always taught my siblings and I that there is so much more out in the world beyond the gates of a small municipality. My sister who lives in New York inspires me to believe that the true beauty in people is the idea that though we may be different, our humanity reveals many similarities. We all want the best for our families, and we all hope to find love. The unity among people is what I long to experience in life and is one of the numerous reasons I want to travel the world.
My hometown settlers may doubt the accomplishment of my dreams or never fully understand why I do not fit their mold, but I have passion and something to prove. Just because it is easy to follow the crowd does not mean it is what should be done. I hope that the lessons my community have instilled in me remind me to always fight for what is right, to seek the truth, to see all people as equal, and to always be true to myself. Above all, I dream that the inspiration my family has instilled in me to seek more never

The settlement of the Massachusetts Bay Colony differed from that of the Jamestown in several aspects, allowing it to become a more successful enterprise. For example, the settlement of Jamestown was greatly hindered by its location next to a swamp and garbage filled rivers, which allowed for the spread of malaria, dysentery, and typhoid fever. These diseases along with the lack of food in Jamestown, resulted in the death of about half of the original population within the first year (p58). However, the Massachusetts Bay Colony had a much healthier climate and environment that benefited them. Another difference that enabled the Massachusetts Bay Colony to be more successful than Jamestown was the settlers themselves and the type of family life that they had.…

The establishment of the Jamestown Colony would not have been possible without the use of indentured servants and slaves. The colony required a steady flow of profit and income to fuel its growing and turn it into the colony the people needed to survive. The planting of tobacco was very important as a source of income, but it required hard labor (nps.gov). In order to achieve such labor, without the spending of much money, indentured servants and slaves were the solution. Jamestown was founded on the principles of finding gold and making profits (us history.org).…

Plymouth has always been a boring town, but Plymouth has developed over the last couple years. I am 15 years old now and I wouldn’t want to leave this for any other town. I have seen plenty of changes in this town, and now we have been introduced to a project in school about renewing some areas of the town. There is about an acre of land next to Penguin Point and another piece of land in front of the gas station Pac and Sac which is just a little bigger than the Penguin Point area. We have to pretend that there is nothing in the area besides concret, and we have to remodel the land.…

The United States has an entire day dedicated to the “discovery” of North America, despite the fact that it was already settled, just not by white people; this entails the ongoing concept of settler colonialism. Settler colonialism is the process in which a group of people, known as colonizers, moves to a new area with the goal of living on and conquering the land. It differs from classical colonialism, or financial imperialism, in that settler colonialism aims to conquer an area permanently, as opposed to temporarily using land to extract resources. Typically, settler colonialism involves one group, the colonists, which perceives the culture they are conquering as uncivilized, and attempts to “modernize” and “civilize” their culture, religion,…
