True heroic qualities stem from a person’s desire to care for or assist others in addition to themselves. Most occasions, admired heroes in today’s society are recognized for sacrificing themselves in one way or another, such as how a hero is featured on television or on the covers of newspapers. Usually, this sacrifice involves said person’s safety in order to aid another. However, the question persists, does a life or death situation have to occur to become a true hero?

In modern society presently, heroes are often times characterized as talented, focusing mainly on singers, pro athletes and various other celebrities. These are the models that children look up to and usually they are who they want to be like when they grow up. They idolize these figures and typically for nothing other than performing their jobs in the spotlight. The second most popular way today’s society characterizes heroes are by portraying their sacrificial image in the media. When we see this in the media often times, it will feature a person who saves someone else in a life or death situation. This is indeed an act of a hero, but we tend to overlook or not consider the everyday heroes around the world. Someone who has lived in the example set by this quote by using his influence and connections to help others is the late Robin Williams. He used his fame thoughtfully and with meaning, yet this is not the only reason that one may consider him heroic. He showed extreme courage through persevering through his depression and continuing his acting. Williams continued to act for his fans despite his home issues, inspiring others to bring joy to the world. He became involved in several rocky relationships throughout his lifetime and was divorced by his first wife in 1988, proceeding to marry his son’s nanny. He persevered through his anxiety showing resilience while still being involved in his family’s lives as well as giving his full effort to his acting career. Medically diagnosed anxiety ultimately contributed to his substance abuse problem which he overcame, inspiring others. He developed a drug and alcohol addiction while he worked on his sitcom, Mork and Mindy. This issue lasted for two decades as he battled sobriety and relapse.
