In Tovani’s Chapter 4, Real Rigor: Connecting Students with Accessible Text, the use of accessible texts to compensate for the challenging content presented in social studies textbooks is thoroughly analyzed. Tovani explains how social studies textbooks cannot be the only source of instruction because they lack the format to develop authentic instruction.
