In Tovani’s Chapter 4, Real Rigor: Connecting Students with Accessible Text, the use of accessible texts to compensate for the challenging content presented in social studies textbooks is thoroughly analyzed. Tovani explains how social studies textbooks cannot be the only source of instruction because they lack the format to develop authentic instruction. Aside from being too stiff, textbooks are usually at a more advanced reading grade level than where students are currently at. In order for instruction to be comprehensive and meaningful, teachers have to be aware of alternative approaches for teaching social studies content.
