Tout Est Perplexe 3.0 You Can Redo

The piece I selected was “Tout est Perplexe,” from the soundtrack of the Japanese animated film, Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo. I selected this piece because it shows a dynamic internal contrast between a mild, lingering sadness and overwhelming depression. The piece starts of softly, with a single instrument playing most of the melody. Moreover, the melody itself is in the minor key, giving the music a sad quality, and it moves upwards in scale in a conjunct manner, so the music does not feel anxious, just sad, like a longing ache. After this section, there is a brief period of respite, where the melody becomes more complex, with several instruments coming together and playing an upwards and slightly more hopeful melody. However, this section does not last long. The piece then becomes overwhelmingly depressive. Various instruments begin playing at once, with much more force than before. It is a similar melody to the first part of the song, but because the texture of the song has gone from single instrument to many instruments playing the same melody in a monophony, the original sadness becomes amplified, going from a longing ache to despair and defeat.
