Stereotypes can be defined as generalizations about a group of people or culture. Stereotypes are often made about a group’s qualities, ethics, physical traits, culture, and attitudes. Tourist can discover stereotypes, through past experiences, the media, and other tourists. These generalizations allow tourists to collectively evaluate their foreign environment, and gives them a sense of familiarity with persons they are often meeting for the first time. For a tourist visiting a foreign country, this helps to simplify the social process. In this sense stereotypes can be helpful, but they also plant dangerous ideas in tourist minds, by having them categorize an entire people as one.
