The link between visuals and scientific aspects of photography can be dated back into the 19th century. This close relationship between both has been a constant discussion. Scientists came up with the idea of cameras that created a scientific revolution focusing on visual items. As scientists started to realize how camera’s functioned, they further explored it’s visual component and how it could be used in different surroundings.
To further support this view, Walker and Chaplin (1997), both agreed that even though language in human relations plays an important role, the sense of sight and vision are more vital.
Sontag (2002), has built up on Garlick’s (2002) query on the importance photography has when it comes to understanding the motivation of tourists to travel. He criticizes this because he believes that photographs visually influence people’s knowledge of a destination and provides them with the guidelines on what places to visit (Go, 2005, p. 74).
When it comes to deciding which country to visit, Holbrook & Hirschman (1982), state that tourists base their choices on historical facts that can be related back to their previous experiences.
