He was balancing himself on a patch of snow on the side of the crevasse wall. Joe decided to lower himself, so he could reach the bottom and become more stable. As he lowered himself, he landed on another patch of snow, and at this point he was 100 feet deep into the crevasse. As he was losing hope he looked up and saw a small opening at the top. He saw the sunlight flooding into what had seemed to be a dark never ending hole. This gave him a boost of confidence, and lead him to his way out. He looked to the side, and saw a angled pile of snow, that he knew he could climb up. With only one stable leg he eventually, after 10 hours, made it to the top. Joe described this feeling, and said, “ The change in me was astonishing. I felt invigorated, full of energy and optimism… It was as if was given this one blessed chance to get out and I was grasping it with every ounce of strength left in me” (Simpson 133). Joe never gave up in this situation, and that is the main reason why he’s alive today. Another key to survival is to keep pushing yourself, even when you feel like you can’t go any further. Touching the void says a lot about survival. It says that survival is not easy and there are many things you need to do to survive. This applies to life in the larger world by saying you can’t give up when small things happen to you. These events are what are preparing you for when you really have to survive in some way.
