In Touching Spirit Bear, I think Cole Matthews has character traits similar to those of a bear. One similar trait I noticed is how dangerous a bear and Cole can be. Background Information and Thesis When America was still in its early years, Indians had a socioeconomic status less than that of a black person -- that is unless they became assimilated tax payers. The U.S. government toyed with them like puppets for years as America expanded west, forcibly securing them in federally controlled reservations under the guise of protecting them. By the mid 1800’s, all Native American tribes resided west of the Mississippi River on reservations due to the Indian Removal Act signed in 1830. Relationships between Indians and the government had been strained at best for decades. The government didn’t view Indians as human, which, in turn, made them think they could simply relocate the tribes whenever they pleased…

There was only one parent that could communicate with Cole and that was his mother, Mrs. Holland. Mr. Holland becomes easily frustrated with Cole because all he wants is for him to have the same passion for music as he does. However, I believe that this is why Mr. Holland feels the need to engage more with his students than Cole because he feels that his students can actually understand how much he appreciates music. In my opinion, this is where all Mr. Holland’s time is consumed rather than where it should be. I can see why Mr. Holland isolates himself from his family, but Cole is his son, and that is where his main priority should be.…
