Have you ever wondered what inspires authors like Ben Mikaelsen to write their books and what personal experiences might have led to this idea? Ben Mikaelsen has written many state Readers Choice Award winning novels, one of them being Touching Spirit Bear. This book is about a boy named Cole Matthews who is sent to a remote Alaskan island as punishment for beating up a kid badly. He dreaded going to the island but meets something that seems impossible, known as a Spirit Bear which is a white, ghostly looking creature that teaches him more about himself that anyone else ever has.
A key thing in Touching Spirit Bear was the spirit bear itself. A leading cause for this idea probably came from the fact that he had a bear of his own. For a great portion of his life, 26 years to be exact, Mikaelsen had adopted, raised, and lived with a “750 pound black bear” (Mikaelsen) named Buffy. To him, Buffy was like a roommate, but more importantly was like his best friend. Sadly, Buffy died at the age of 26 on September 1st, 2010, but he did not leave without leaving a mark for he had left Mikaelsen with the inspiration to

Growing up in Bolivia, he was a misfit already due to his skin tone compared to the other kids, and this led to him being bullied. He spent a large part of his life, up until his teenage years, being angry and not liking himself for who he was.Mikaelsen even says in an interview “Sadly, it took becoming angry teenager and seeing inside a few police stations before I learned to embrace my differences and be proud of them.”. His goal while writing Touching Spirit Bear was to share with teenagers “the hard lessons over the years” (Mikaelsen). In a way, Cole Matthews was a reflection of Mikaelsen himself and was trying to share the knowledge that he wished someone had told him with other

The differences between the two books is on page 9 of Touching Spirit Bear it states “He hated his parents. His mom acted like a scared barbie, always looking good but never fighting back or standing up to someone” That shows the difference between the two books are that he doesn't care about his mom in the book Touching Spirit Bear but cares about his mom in the book the Ghost of Spirit Bear. I enjoy the book Touching Spirit Bear more than the book the ghost of Spirit Bear because I think there was a lot more action in Touching Spirit. In touching spirit bear he was mauled by a bear, a tree almost hit cole, he beat up Peter, and on page 89 it says “And then the mouse stiffened and quit squirming.” He ate a mouse!…

In Touching Spirit Bear, I think Cole Matthews has character traits similar to those of a bear. One similar trait I noticed is how dangerous a bear and Cole can be. At first sight you would think that a bear is the most dangerous and violent creature to inhabit it a forest. It’s the same concept with Cole.…

One of the craziest things hes done was threaten and kill the spirit bear(page 44) but at the end the bear literally crushes his body and nearly kills him. Thats insane he even thought about killing the spirit bear because the spirit bear was stronger, faster, and fitter. The reason he threatens to kill the spirit bear was because he was angry the bear showed no fear and didn't back down(page 44). Touching Spirit Bear Connection The book “Touching Spirit Bear” by Ben Mikaelson reminds me of the real world. The part of the book i am relating to is when Cole Matthews was extremely hungry but ignored that necessity and just went to the shore to drink water as much as he would need to pee and be full but of water. Later that day, Cole went to the shore and saw seagulls, he realized that they were eating a fish, Cole was absolutely STARVED so he scared the seagulls away and ate a half seagle eaten fish. I can relate this to the real world because Cole Matthews was persevering himself, through a lot if that was anyone in this class i can guarantee they would not survive or persevere as much as Cole Matthews did.…
