Touching Spirit Bear Character Analysis

Cole’s Profile In the book, “Touching Spirit Bear” by Ben Mikaelsen, Cole Matthews is a bad boy. He’s a 15 year old baby faced child who has been in trouble with the law half his life. His father whips him with a belt whenever Cole sets him off while his mother just stands there watching. Because of that, he has let his anger out on everyone and everything else. I would describe Cole as a distrustful kid because of his actions. I believe this because he cannot trust anything or anyone unless they are afraid of him. Also, he thinks he can be so tough even though he’s afraid of one of the littlest thing. Being alone.

Cole is an innocent-looking-baby-faced-fifteen-year-old from Minneapolis whose father has beaten him for years now and all the bruises and scars still remain on his skin. His parents are usually drunk and they don’t care about him and they’re divorced which doesn’t make his situation any better. Since Cole’s visit on the island, the mythical creature Spirit Bear, has ripped his chest open and has broke lot’s of bones in his body. Cole probably doesn’t look the best right now, but neither does his personality.

He is trying to change the way he behaves because I feel like he knows life would be easier and not under so much pressure all the time if he changed. Cole also comprehended the circle of life and what the purpose of life is. In the beginning of the book Cole was a cocky, snobby boy who didn’t care about anything, now he has changed and knows what he has to do to make things better and what he has to do to change his ways.
