They were trying to make him believe what the party told him. They told him that he would believe that two plus two equaled five if they told him to. They tried to make him betray his lover Julia. They beat him every day then one day they started to stop beating him and started what they called therapy, which was a type a torture which caused great pain. Winston was questioned by someone that he had once trusted. Does the name O’Brien seem familiar to you? Well guess what he had double crossed Winston. He questioned Winston asking questions such as what is two plus two. To which Winston replied four, but that was not the answer that O’Brien was looking for. He pushes the lever turning on the torture device. He turns it off and asks the question again Winston says five, but O’Brien knew that Winston did not mean it so he turned on again this time higher than the last. He turned it off and asked the question again; Winston then answers whatever you want it to be. This time O’Brien could tell he meant it, and that he had broken Winston. Then a few days later Winston is brought in to be tortured again O’Brien was trying to get Winston betray his love Julia. This took very long and several rounds of torture to break Winston, but finally after several painful rounds Winston finally sold Julia out. He tells all that she did.
