In today’s society, individuals are allowed to branch out and explore science and technology. That is why we are technologically advanced unlike the totalitarian society in Anthem. Equality 7-2521’s society was primitive because they were not allowed to be individuals. In the novella by Ayn Rand, individuality is used to show why science and technology is controlled by a totalitarian society.
All of the citizens of the collectivist society in Anthem were denied individuality. The rulers of the society made thinking and inventing a collectivist activity because they did not want anyone to gain knowledge and overturn their society. The leaders of Equality’s society were afraid the citizens would gain knowledge and eventually overthrow them .The leader wanted a society where everyone had a place and not one “individual” had power. The society Equality lived in was primitive because it limited the power of individuals. Equality tested the idea of individualism when creating his light, but he was shut down because the society leaders did not want individualism therefore their society was primitive. Every man of the Home of Scholars had to agree upon an idea for it to be tried and tested. Inventing alone causes work to get done quicker because individuals are determined to accomplish their goal ,whereas there were not any goals of the society Equality lived in. Equality had to go against collectivism and be selfish to be able to create the light. In the end, Equality’s society took away his individualism so that they could keep a collectivist society, but in order to keep a collectivist society, they had to be primitive in the means of science and
