In George Orwell’s “1984”, we are introduced to a future that is under a totalitarian influence in which it monitors its citizens and eliminate anyone who is a threat against the system. Orwell describes different methods of controlling people such examples are: the two minute hate, hate week, thought police, the spies, propaganda, youth leagues, separating on classes, and the concept of Big brother. These methods are used to prevent people from rebelling against their system. Another author who created a similar type of environment is E.M Forster in “The Machine Stops”, where people are custom to obey the machine and anything that isn’t in the guide book would be considered taboo. The committee is in charge of most of human decisions and …show more content…
These activities are made to worship big brother who is the key figure in the Party. The role of the children was to, “[turn] outward, against the enemies of the State, against foreigners, traitors, saboteurs, thought-criminals.” (Orwell 24). By doing this they are also introduced to hate and fear of anyone who poses a threat to BIG Brother. They are introduced to War propaganda, hate week, two minute hate, execution of war criminals, and the concept of not trusting anyone. These children would often turn their parents in to the thought police making it, “normal for people for people over thirty to be frightened of their own children” (Orwell 24). Children are easily manipulated when they are young because they haven’t had any experience of their own. If they are introduced concepts such as loyalty for the party they will use that as their foundation for growth and development. In “1984” they used loyalty for Big Brother as the foundation and reinforced it with groups such as The Anti-Sex league and Youth …show more content…
There is more extreme method such as, “Each infant was examined at birth, and all who promised undue strength were destroyed.” (E.M Foster 23). They justified this action by saying that the environment isn’t meant for athletic people because they would want to run and climb. The creators of the machine knew that certain people would rebel against the life style of the machine and decided to eliminate them before they could develop and rebel. Another way the controlled children is determining who was allowed to have children. When Kuno asked to be a father the Committee refused his proposal because, “His was not a type that the Machine desired to hand on.”(E.M Foster 25). By controlling who gets to have children and what type of people live it allows this civilization to have better control of their citizens. This would be children that never existed because they could be trouble to the machine.
