Tort Liability is the legal obligation to a victim who has been wronged by neglect. There are several issues of tort liability that come up for a principal. In discussing this with Mrs. Williams, she brought up several instances when tort liability is an issue for her. Constant vigilance in her decision making about what the school’s liability would be if she said yes to a certain request. She reminds herself often about how to ensure that no one is injured or wronged because of her neglect to provide a safe environment. Williams has taken regarding supervision of students as they arrive at school before school hours is to provide teachers assigned to a rotating duty team to watch and help students in the front and rear of the school. One issue that came up for her regarding morning supervision was that one of the buses wanted to drop off students 15 minutes before teachers were asked to be on duty. Mrs. Williams had to negotiate with the bus driver and advocate for her teachers to reach a reasonable compromise for both parties. She found it unreasonable to ask her teachers to give up that much of their morning planning time. Consequently, with both parties agreeing to give up 5 minutes of time, a compromise was reached. The teachers were asked to go out to duty 5 minutes early to accommodate the earlier arrival. This was received graciously overall, but is still a constant battle to remind teachers to be on duty for the students arrival. Another part of this before school supervision issue is that so many students live close enough to walk that they were arriving 15-20 minutes early. It was a task of the principal to help inform parents of the times supervision is available. After some reminders early in the year through newsletters and school reach messages, the students were beginning to come at a more reasonable time. When there are occasional early arrivers, Mrs. Williams has them come in the cafeteria to be seated and wait as the cafeteria staff prepare the breakfast. This way they are being supervised and not on their own for up to 15 minutes without the duty being present.
