Torsion spring guitar doors utilize the tension of springs to open and close your doors. Unfortunately, they are prone to difficulties that make their operation more difficult. Thankfully, there are several procedures you can perform to get it back in shape.
Checking the Torsion Shaft
One of the most common causes of poor torsion spring garage door operation is an improperly maintained torsion shaft. This shaft works with the springs to lift your door and must be regularly inspected. Properly inspecting your torsion shaft and its brackets will ensure it is operating properly.
Start by disconnecting your garage door opener from its power source. Doing this helps you avoid the danger of accidentally electrocuting yourself or causing a short. Find the plug connecting the power source (usually attached directly to the door opening mechanism) and unplug it. …show more content…
Climb it and look for a long bar at the top. This is your torsion shaft: it should have springs wrapped around it.
Look at both ends of the bar and find where it connects into the opener grooves. These small connectors are called end brackets. Watch the brackets as you lift your door a few inches: the bar should rotate smoothly. If it doesn't, your springs likely need to be lubricated.
However, there's one more test left: the center bracket test. You'll see this in the center of the bar, where the spring's connect. Clean any kind of filth, such as dirt or mud, off the bracket and lift the door a few inches. If the springs move, tighten the bolts to hold them still.
Lubricating the
