During Christmas break in 1917 my mother and I went to visit my sister in Toronto, Canada. The first World War was happening then and while I was there I saw a lot of wounded soldiers. I knew I wanted to help, so I made the decision to quit school and train to be a nursing assistant. I worked in a hospital in Toronto until the first World War was over.
December 28, 1920 was a day I will never forget. It was the first time I ever rode in an airplane and the day I knew I wanted to be a pilot. On December 15, 1921 I accomplished my biggest achievement and became a pilot. Two years later on May 16, 1923 I became the 16th woman to receive my international pilots license.
