A seminar of this sort has the potential to be significant because this will give Oklahomans the resources they need to be successful in enacting change in the legislature to further protect their children. The key adult participants in this seminar are parents of k-12 students in the state of Oklahoma. Following the May 20th tornado we learned that parents of seven students didn’t get to pick their children up from school that day. While this may be a small number in comparison to the amount of students who were in harms way due to natural, uncontrollable, and relatively unpredictable conditions, no parent should ever have the stress of dropping their child off at school and wondering if they will be able to pick them up again. In addition, state legislators, especially those who have children in k-12 education, are key participants to this seminar. Many state legislators currently have or have had children in the Oklahoma education system. With our number one goal being to call legislators to draft legislation requiring storm shelters for the protection of all of our students while at school, their participation in such an educational seminar is crucial, and will aid them in their decision-making and legislation-drafting …show more content…
By doing this we can ensure that participants will be engaged with the contents of this seminar. We have decided to facilitate and implement this seminar through the lens of Knowles’ concept of Andragogy, and the concept of embodied learning.
Knowles’ concept of Andragogy is based on 6 basic assumptions about adult learners, which are: 1) adults are self-directed, 2) adults have wealth of knowledge based on their experience, which is a good resource for learning, 3) adults learn based on their social role, 4) adults are more problem-centered in their learning and prefer a certain level of immediacy of application, 5) the most useful motivations for adults are internal, and 6) adults need to know why they need to learn something.
