Athletes who make record breaking salaries or even somewhat big salaries, seem to need a little more protection than others. Every time they go outside it is like risking their lives with all their luxurious cars and extra diamonds around their neck and wrist. Players have been assaulted and even killed just because they are seen in fancy cars or with hundreds in their pockets. For example Howard Porter, former Chicago Bulls center. John Brewer writes in his article about Howard Porter’s death “She said she was streetwalking near her apartment on the 300 block of Sherburne Avenue when a “big pretty car” driven by Porter pulled up.” (John Brewer, How Howard Porter Died). Later that night that Howard Porter went out with the young lady, he was beaten in an assault and was put into coma, Porter spent a week in a coma before he died on May 26 from blunt-force trauma. Whether it was that people envied him or just wanted a little something that night, money attracts bad people and athletes are the most qualified to be most

Big time hollywood actors and actress, Grammy-winning musicians or artists are all household names. Celebrities are consistently praised for their talents, but a lot of them are drug users, alcoholics or criminals. Fame has a way of covering crime and helping people to look past a man’s flaws and see them for their talents. The only art form that this is not the case is in sports, in sports, a man can be one of the best baseball players of all time, play for 24 seasons, collect over 4,000 hits and make a mistake that will keep that mans name out of baseball for the rest of time. This tragedy happened unfairly to a man who gave his all for the sport that turned its back to him.…

One reason i feel they are not overpaid is they had earned to be there they had earned to be playing on that field. Also the better you are the more the teams are going to want to pay for you to be on their team. I also know that athletes had injuries that can cost up to $70,000. Like Paul George when he snapped his leg is basketball that costed approximately $65,000 dollars for surgery. One example is Tom Brady he is a 5 time super bowl champ quarterback.…

In today’s economic system, money has played an enormous role in the National Basketball Association. Over the years, many team owners have debated if the the NBA should have a salary cap. Salary caps exist in most sport leagues and are one of several mechanisms that allow the billionaire team owners to collectively control and suppress the wages of the athletes. The National Basketball Association must continue to have a salary cap for many reasons such as talent distribution and competitive balance, higher attendance and increased revenues, increased competition and media exposure, and wage parity and organizational intelligence. Without a salary cap the NBA will not be maintained and would be a disaster.…

Woodrum, Brandon 09/02/16 Microeconomics Module 3 Labor Market Question - 1 What economic principle justifies the high salaries of some professional athletes? Suppose the manager of a baseball team wants to hire a new pitcher for $4 million per year. Athletes in these highest-revenue sports rack up huge amounts from television rights, ticket sales, international broadcasts, and product endorsements because of their skills. In my opinion they deserve more compensation than the average $40,000/year they earn from their scholarships. It does not mean that college athletes should be making millions of dollars, but the revenue-generating sport student-athletes should get more for their skills and their help to promote their school’s athletic…

I am personally a collegiate athlete and knows what an athlete goes through. Players shouldn’t get paid millions of dollars like professional athletes, because why would players go on to try and play professionally. On the contrary they should deserve some type of revenue whether it's for clothes shopping, take someone out on a date, gas money, etc. For example that’s the same thing as me asking my friend to do something for me and he does all the work while I sit back and relax.…

Players should be compensated for putting their lives at risk, and intentionally injuring themselves for their teams. “Is it fair that coach Nick Saban of the University of Alabama recently signed a $55.2 million contract, but Tyrone Prothro, the Crimson Tide wide receiver celebrated for making “The Catch” in 2005, fractured both bones in his lower leg in his next game? Saban is wealthy and Protho is in debt and out of football” (Karaim 14). It is hard to understand how this player should suffer from insufficient funds after playing a big role on the football team. The opposite side has their own opinion about the situation.…

The long time debate of whether or not to pay student athletes for their work on the field has been battled for years. Currently the NCAA is providing resources to aid in the success of 460,000 college athletes that make up 19,000 teams (NCAA.org). The resources they are providing, include: compensation for room and board, tuition, and books. To give money beyond those things: has the potential to ruin the authenticity of college athletics, will produce unfairness throughout each of the sports, and blurs the line of the privileges these student athletes receive. With that said, NCAA schools should not be permitted to pay student-athletes for play beyond their current athletic scholarships.…

That’s nothing more than an excuse to detract from the issue at hand. If every system had to either be perfect or not exist at all, well… we wouldn’t have many systems. The same pay system that is used in any other big business would work in this case, too. Players could be paid based on productivity. The more value the athlete brings, the more he is paid (Siebold, S., 2015).…

Josh, it is with certainty that violence is regarded as part of the game; thus, barbaric behavior takes a back seat to what would be felony assault and battery outside the arena. It is expected that sports is aggressive however, the real question is, What is the boundary where an injury is the result of honest play turn into an injury as a result of excessive, intentional use of force subjecting the player to criminal liability? In regards to the case you mentioned between Benson and Abdul-Jabbar, in my opinion Abdul-Jabbar definitely crossed the line for he deliberately assaulted Benson with malicious intent. In our society, it is interesting that many sports celebrities (and most of their fans) appear to feel they are entitled to immunity…
