Too Much Homework Is Bad

Does your child seem to get a lot of homework? This seems to be a problem affecting many students in our world. Today, many students seem to have so much homework. The effects of too much homework are as follows: disturbance of the life balance of the child, less time for friends, family, and extracurricular activities, and greater amounts of stress. For these reasons, the amount of homework a child receives must be reduced.
To begin with, too much homework disturbs the life balance of the child. On the website “New Kids-Center” they say that, “Children who have too much homework will not be able to balance their life, which could impact their circadian rhythm,” ("Negative Effects of Too Much Homework."). Like many children, the writer of “We’re destroying our kids — for nothing: Too much homework, too many tests, too much needless pressure” has children who spend a lot of time doing homework, “Slowly, though, I began to notice that our lives were less and less our own. During the week, the children would appear for dinner and then disappear into hours of assignments. Like Jamey, many kids do not have time to do things other than homework all night, and according to “New Kids-Center”, “Social opportunities provide children with the chance to learn impulse control, conflict management, and other social skills. If they are not given enough opportunities for socialization, their overall development may suffer,” (“Negative Effects of Too Much Homework”). Many people believe that kids spend so much time on homework because they procrastinate, which some do, but kids procrastinate because “[they do not understand] the steps involved in a project […also] because they don’t see how the project is relevant or important to them. With all the stress from the overabundance of homework, many kids are facing an increase of health problems. Like many children, the writer of “We’re destroying our kids — for nothing: Too much homework, too many tests, too much needless pressure” has children who are having an increase in health problems, “Jamey started complaining about headaches, stomachaches, and sleepiness, which she attributed to the pressures of school. Though she was just twelve, Jamey sometimes went to bed later than I did. Zak, only eight years old, also started getting headaches, from worry about all the work he had to do,” (“We’re destroying our kids — for nothing: Too much homework, too many tests, too much needless pressure”). It’s amazing how early students are getting more health problems, Zak is only eight. How is that normal? A study conducted by Stanford Graduate School of Education has even found “…a clear connection between the students' stress and physical impacts -- migraines, ulcers and other stomach problems, sleep deprivation and exhaustion, and weight loss,” (“Can too much homework make your child sick? Study finds 'clear connection' between students' stress and physical illness”). Children should not have to sacrifice their health in order to finish all their homework, get an “A”, and/or get into a good college. It is insane how too much homework can cause physical health
