Toni Smith Argumentative Essay

Decent Essays
Professional sports players have meant a lot to the U.S. for many generations. But people nowadays think that these big, money making machines are being disrespectful to our country. People calling these men and women “traitors” or “a disgrace” or even telling them to “leave the country”. These rude comments aren’t meant to be said to every athlete. It's actually going towards Toni Smith, the then 21-year-old senior guard on the Manhattanville College women’s basketball team. She turned her back on america's flag and expressing her opinions on the 2003 Iraq War. Toni Smith did not do anything wrong and was not betraying our country because she was just saying her thoughts and feelings. She was not trying to be rude.

This might first be hard to understand but while looking through the work of Laura Mulvey we come to understand that “phantasy” is a mixture of sexual desire and self-image. Mulvey states, “During its history, the cinema seems to have evolved a particular illusion of reality in which this contradiction between libido and ego has found a beautifully complementary phantasy world.” (VP & NC pg. 308).…

Social worker and reformer Florence Kelly, strived to make a mark on the pitiful and unfair working condition that were present through the early nineteen hundreds. Through the use of a creative and elaborate speech Kelly forced the women of Philadelphia to stand up for children’s rights and form the National American Woman Suffrage Association. In order for her voice to be heard Kelly conjured a speech with a wonderful flow, full of pathos and empathy, as well as brilliant word choice and a striking message to the listener. Without these underlying aspects her argument could have been overlooked, or diminished as a simple radical, or protester of child labor, but due to these aspects Kelly’s speech inspired women across the nation.…
