The United States of America is attractive to people from different parts of the world who moved out of their country and start their new life in America. People come to America for many reasons such as the “American Dream”. Nevertheless, to begin a new life journey in a new country it is not easy to accomplish especially for immigrants who must overcome many difficulties in order to succeed in America. In the short story “The Lesson” by Toni Cade Bambara, the protagonist Sylvia as a native American also live in Harlem a low-income community. Sylvia’s community is a lack of resources, suffers in poverty. Ms. Moore, the antagonist exposes Sylvia about the inequity in wealth and distribution in America. One day the antagonist took her students for a trip to the Fifth Avenue to a manufacture “Toys shop”. It is a place that Sylvia and her friends have never went before not awarded off and they do not have any basic knowledge that there is such place outside her neighborhood. According to the text Sylvia mentions that “Handcrafted sailboat of fiberglass at one thousand one hundred ninety-five dollars. Unbelievable” (pg307). This means the expensiveness of the toy which makes Sylvia feel shock. In fact, Sylvia says “My sailboat cost me about fifty cents” (pg.307). Sylvia reflects in her own situation and realize she was at a disadvantage living level of the social class. The society contains the existence of injustice unfairness and discrimination. In her poem, she argues that in the America society have social issues in stereotype. For example, Chin says “Oh, how trustworthy our daughters how thrifty our sons! How we’ve managed to fool the experts in education, statistic and demography- We’re not very creative but not adverse to rote- learning. Indeed, they can see us. But the “Model Minority is a tease” (lines 36- 42). In these few lines Chin stress the idea that in the American society people tend to labeled the Chinese immigrants group as the model of minority which leads to Chinese children are intelligent in education, statistic and demography in compared to another minority group.
