Countless symbols used in "The Lesson," by Toni Cade Bambara signify the social and economic disparity faced by the children in this story which are a replicate of what is the reality in the contemporary world. The youngsters in the story, not asked for it, share out the bad hand by fate and It is up to them to choose what to do about it or even to do anything at all. It is important to understand that these children are used by the author to demonstrate life in the society concerning factors that require one to make prudent decisions and others that are beyond the control of the human beings. It is apparent that deceptiveness of appearance is common in the modern society. It is imperative that people get concerned with the inward appearance including positive thinking and attitude over the outward appearances that in the end results to only pain and disappointments. The deceptiveness of appearance denies us our true self thus hindering creativity and innovation at the expense of mediocrity. It nothing is done about all this, then we are bound to live in a society that is full of mistrusts, misunderstandings as well as lacking integrity.
