Miss Moore was the woman on the block with "no first name" (Bambara). She had nappy hair, proper speech, and never wore makeup. Most of the kids on the block laugh at her because she was so different. She was an educated African American that moves into a poor neighborhood. She took the responsibility to teach the less fortune children about the many problems in the African American community and to "expose them to various issues and ways of life." ("The Lesson"). Throughout the entire story, Miss Moore never changed her ways. She was there to teach and teaching is what she did for the group of kids. Miss Moore is very important to this story because if she had not moved to the kid's community, they would have never seen how different their community was compared to the others. Miss Moore stands out because she is the type of woman that does not and will never let anything tie her down. She will always stay true to herself.
