The poems “Ex-Basketball Player” and “Anthem for Doomed Youth” are two very different poems; in setting, the way they are written, and how they portray heroism. The poem “Ex-Basketball Player” is written third person and focuses on a man who was once great at basketball, but is stuck in his fame of high school. “Anthem for Doomed Youth” is written in third person talking about WWI, how gruesome the war was and how the soldiers do not receive the honourable death they deserve. “Ex-Basketball Player” is written into five stanzas from third person, with the first giving us an image of where the character “Flick Webb” now resigns. This stanza gives us an idea of exactly where Flick is in his life and it is crucial to the rest of the poem.…

Ponder the possibility of being surrounded by your family, not by blood, but by the commitment, you are very aware that they are willing to forfeit their lives if that means saving yours, and you the same. This family has been your family ever since the age of seven, and now you all must fight alongside one another in order to protect, as well as expand your power and land. As the battle is about to start, your general begins an oration, as the speech proceeds, you feel empowered. The aforementioned may have been a generalization of the emotion and events that ensued prior to war, but the concept remains the same. The “Spartan Creed,” was a war poem written around 650 B.C. by Tyrtaeus.…

There was a time When a free sun ran across cobalt And fields of lavender drifted o’er canopies of emerald trees To dissolve into the sky; wisps diluting sapphire to amethyst While radiance transformed our eyes in a flurry of colors Into shards of light, revolving around an epicenter of solid fixation And we spent hours staring; eyes glistening in fascination With not a care in the world Like Noah who sent a dove to bring back hope We were at peace with calm Not a matter to worry Nor a worry in mind Peacefully, Blissfully Then as time wove its tapestry in whirlwinds of flashes…

In the poem,"Minerva Jones" by Edgar Lee Masters ,he writes about the sad life of an old crippled lady who was hated. I learned that this person is a writer of poetry and isn 't very pleasant looking from how Masters describes her. The person she speaks about in the poem are "Butch" Weldy and Doctor Meyers, who have different poems of their own as well. " Butch" Weldy is the one that hunts down Minerva (Goddess of Wisdom) and Doctor Meyers is the one that attempts to save her. The poet lets us know that small-town America is very judgmental because you can say that those who were wise were the ones being judged("hunts") by their appearance and their beliefs.…

The poem "Theme for English B", by Langston Hughes is written in 1951, before the civil rights movement. Throughout the poem, Hughes is very nonchalant as he discusses the theme of racism as well as what it means to be "free". As he discusses race many think he is very "soft" when there was much to be angry about during this time period. I believe the poem is still very effective and the fact that he does not display anger makes it even more significant. Even though he is not angry, he does display other emotions throughout the piece because Langston Hughes writes in a unique style.…

The War Prayer carries a heavy anti-war message using a cynical tone of religion. The setting of the poem is at height when Imperialism was the strongest. Twain used collective phrases to glorify war and emphasize patriotism. Twain is able to capture this setting by describing a celebration in the streets, “the drums were beat, the bands playing, the top pistols popping, the bunches firecrackers hissing and spluttering”, “flags flashed in the sun” (Perkins, 57). To further capture this image Twain used the pastors speech of “devotion to flag and country.…

“Dulce Et Decorum Est” is a poem by Wilfred Owen that showed the British what war was like when it first came out during World War I. People back then had an illusion in their minds of what war was really like and how their soldiers died, and this poem changed that. Owen uses poetic devices like imagery and metaphor to show the reader how terrible deaths in World War I were and how not every man could die a hero. “Dulce Et Decorum Est” shows that not all of the deaths in war are glorious. The quote this poem is named for, “dulce et decorum est pro patria mori,” can roughly be translated to, “how honorable it is to die for your country,” (Owen). Owen calls this an old lie that society would tell the soldiers as they were shipped off to battle.…

Also the comma in that quote again leaves a small gap between, (“In the old times”) and (“before he threw away his knees”) which again stresses the gap and again increases the anti-climax. He also uses a hyphen here, “He thought he’d better join – He wonders why.” (Line 24) Again Owen is creating an anti-climax but he is trying to stress the fact that the veteran feels as if he lost his limbs for nothing…

World War One was the first of its kind, men used toxic gasses as weapons, there were tanks, airplanes, and other technological advances. The mass development of war also means there are more ways to kill the enemy. Isaac Rosenberg’s “Break of Day in the Trenches” and Wilfred Owen’s “Dulce et Decorum Est” are both poems that depict World War One as hellish and evil in nature, as soldiers, they are surrounded by death. Both poets represent death in an ironic way, because war is considered hellish and gruesome, people die, and Owen shows the irony between the romanticized war while Rosenberg shows irony through the freedom of a rat; the two poets alludes to death in devices such as imagery. “Break of Day in the Trenches” and “Dulce et Decorum Est” stand in for death because they use war as a paradox.…
