“When you find yourself in dark places, there's always a light somewhere in that darkness, and even if that light is inside of you, you can illuminate your own darkness by shedding that light on the world.” Yusef Salaam, Punching the Air. I believe that the tone of a book is important because it is the cause of emotions related to the novel in question. I feel Punching the Air uses tone to enhance their work by using it to create sympathy for the main character, anger for the lack of proper justice, and a more somber tone for the situation at hand. Overall, Punching the Air is a novel that has a strong grasp on tone which helps it create a more dynamic and interesting book for the reader.

To start, I think that the novel uses tone to make the reader more sympathetic towards the main character, Amal. For example, when it says, “On the count of aggravated assault and battery,” the court will not hear.

The stone turns into a mountain The brick turns into a building

This quote, along with the context of the time they spent together working on that mural, creates general moods of irritation to resentment against the employees of the prison. The simplicity of the lines with that clear message also creates tension and resentment in oneself. The work also shows us an instance of Amal’s life. In the poetry, it states that when he was trying to express himself because he didn’t feel heard, he was locked up and put in solitary confinement.
