Tom’s surgery has emotionally affected her; causing stress, anxiety and worry. It has affected her sleeping pattern because she was waking up earlier than usual and found it difficult to go back to sleep. She was worried when Tom got a bit depressed as he was recovering slowly but the family gave support for both of them. Intellectually, Tom’s sleeping pattern was affected, making him wake up in the night and causing him to be unable to go back to sleep. He got up and did things to entertain himself. This woke up Sandra, so she also got less sleep and suffered tiredness, inability to focus and agitation during the day. She was also worried about how Sandra would manage to look after Tom once he got home. At times it was difficult organising family life at home, i.e. who would pick up the children from school, what to cook for dinner, doing the washing and housework when she was out most of the day at the hospital. Her husband was a great support, emotionally and helping to sort my brother and me out. When Tom was quite early in the recovery stage, Michelle lost some sleep due to worry. Michelle had to take time off work to take Sandra to hospital to visit Tom. She was spending quite a lot of petrol driving to Harefield and parking. Once Tom was home, Michelle helped Sandra to go out to see her friends while Michelle stayed at home to look after Tom. She received support from her friends both emotionally and practically- they looked after my brother and I after school when Dad was working a few times which greatly helped my Michelle.
