Toms In Today's Society

Did you know that sixty-five percent of children in the world don’t have a pair of shoes to wear? People go through different situations in life and are not always as fortunate as others. There are many organizations around the world that help children get shoes, clean clothes and hot meals. It really touches my heart when I hear that children don’t have the things that they need. I just sit back and think how that could have easily been me.
TOMS® was founded in 2006 by Blake Mycoskie. His vision from the beginning was to make very stylish, affordable shoes for people to wear while still helping people all around the world. TOMS® sell shoes to people all over the world and for every pair of shoes purchased they give a brand new pair to a child

This may surprise my viewers because it is a common misconception that the majority of children living in poverty or unstable homes are of the minority. This is false; it’s an eye opener that white children, who are often assumed to be of the upper class, are actually just as bad off, if not worse than other minorities. I incorporated these photographs to evoke strong feelings in the individuals reading these table tents, they kindle emotions inside of young college students because they’re not use to seeing this side of society. Students are bound to the campuses of their universities where they are not exposed to the harsh reality of the outside world. I have also provide statistics and factual information about these children who are bound by poverty, abusive families or are in unhealthy/harmful situations.…

If someone were to see Judson Bliss, the Director of Homeless Programs at St. Patrick Center in downtown St. Louis, at work, they might notice the water bottle he often carries around with him. Wrapped around Bliss’ water bottle is a simple bracelet that conveys much deeper meaning about the work that he does, and a large-scale issue in American society: homelessness. The bracelet Bliss’ son, an Affton High School student, gave to him, was a fundraising bracelet for the son’s math teacher whose child was afflicted by a form of cancer. The fundraiser was created by a homeless student. Yes, a homeless student.…

Benevolence It is Christmas morning, so you wake up and your is heart pumping with excitement to look under the Christmas tree for your presents. When you arrive your heart fills with much despair because you find nothing there. Unfortunately, this happens to kids all around the world, some of these kids may go to your school. Consequently, every year, as a tradition my grandmother gathers up all of her grandkids and we volunteer at the Salvation Army Intake Center encompassed with her church. At eight a.m. sharp we get out of the car to have the brisk air slap us in the face, we halfway jog and halfway run into the place, we meet hundreds of boxes as soon as we open the door.…

On a blazing hot afternoon, I was with my Peer Ministry. It seemed like our whole group, interacting with the sizable population of homeless on the streets of Riverside, CA, was working like a fast food crew; we were distributing food from our cars at a superhuman pace. This activity seemed like any ordinary job our group did together — until I handed a brown paper bag to a homeless African American man. His expression registered shock. He put his hand on my shoulder and said, “Son, how did you know I needed help?”…

As a human being, every person faces some difficulties in his or her life; however, some challenges are forgettable but some are not. The obstacles that someone faces while standing to help others are unforgettable. In The Blue Sweater, Jacqueline Novogratz recounts her childhood memory, she remembers her first grade teacher, Sister Mary Theophane, who once advised her, “’Regardless of what you become’, she said, ‘remember always that to whom much is given, much is expected. God gave you many gifts and it is important that you use them for others as best you can”’ (4).…

14.7 million children live in poverty. I am one of them. And yet, no one seems to notice me or care. I’m walking along the sidewalk of Dubourg Hall when I see him, a tall African American man with a grocery cart filled to the brim with what looked like trash to me, but to him, was probably personal treasures. At first glance, a ping of fear captivates my nerves as I stare intensely at the pavement as to not make eye contact. But as we draw closer, my unjustifiable fear transforms to empathy, sadness, and compassion. This obviously cold and homeless man must encounter judgmental eyes, disgusted faces, and pure hatred every day he walks his streets. He lives his life pacing up and down the same roads searching for something, anything.…

Volunteering at the homeless shelter is one of my favorite things to do. A few weeks ago, on a serene Saturday morning, my family and I volunteered at Loaves and Fishes. It was special to see just the sheer amount of people who had come out to volunteer on that Saturday. If you think about, they could’ve been doing anything on that Saturday morning. Yet, they decided to help give back to their community.…
