Tom's Charleston Dance Concert Report

Decent Essays
The piece was about the individual lives of a group of teenagers (the most prominent is a boy named Tom who is humiliated through two videos that go viral on the Internet) and the misuse of social media. Although it was of the drama genre, it did feature some comedic elements, such as Tom's Charleston dance. It's main themes were LGBT awareness and social media. The styles of the piece, which was set in the present day, were abstract and naturalistic. The target audience were Year 7 pupils, who watched it in the school hall where the piece was performed on the stage (the performace space). My contribution was as an actor. Technical elements used included the lighting. A few design elements were also used – specifically, the costumes and masks

I will start this by being brutally honest, I tend to indulge myself in things others would refer to as “mushy crap”; ice cream, boy bands, badly written romance novels, all things I enjoy, along with Waitress. The musical based closely off of a 2007 film of the same name, opened on Broadway in April of 2016 and has been experiencing a successful run so far, with a tour scheduled for 2017. I had the pleasure of seeing Waitress this summer, in early July and, admittedly, shed a tear or two, or twenty. The journey to Broadway began with a workshop in 2014.…

On the night of September 30th, I was able to attend the Williamsburg Salsa Orchestra’s concert at Baldwin Wallace University. A feature that made them unique was their ability to arrange modern songs into a salsa format. It was a lively performance where many audience members danced along with the band, demonstrating the danceable feature of the music. The orchestra used many of the traditional salsa instruments, including timbales, conga drums, a cowbell, and a guiro.…

Jamaica, the musical by Fred Saidy and Yip Harburg, captured a world where love and dreams seem to have no boundaries, especially when it comes about the American dream. The powerful cast successfully manage to convey different ideas and represent different characters in a fairly limited space., which requires certain level of organization and rehearsal. In Jamaica, the music, the lyrics of the songs and even the lighting worked together to bring to life to an island full of people with dreams and ambitions. Furthermore, the successful use of stage, audience space and actors to change the settings of the play, was the most evident success of the playwright’s conscious use of space and resources.…

This piece is based on pitch set classes 01346, 0124, and 014 as well as their respective inversions and transformations. The piece is set in an ABA’-like form and explores the versatility of the clarinet. In the beginning, the piano introduces the theme of 01346 and following measure presents a chord of 0124 with the melody harking back to tonality by using an unprepared suspension. These set classes form the A part of the piece.…

I am sure during its time it must have caused a stir in the audience. Even today I think it would cause discussion if performed in front of a general audience. One thing I noticed about this piece specifically the “music” drove the dance. I believe the poem is the leading force, in conveying the message. I think without it the piece could be interpreted into any form of feeling distressed.…

The heat from the stage lights, the watchful gazes of the audience, and the sweat dripping off of our faces as we struggle to remember our lines, these sensations of being on stage are what caused the performing arts to become not only an activity, but also a passion and an unexpected source of personal growth. Through my experiences in drama and music I have been able to discover my own meaning of fulfillment and define who the person behind my appearance truly is. My passion in the performing arts started when I was a young child first learning to play the violin. Picking up the violin at the age of 6, I became stuck on one of the most basic songs for almost a whole year. At that time no one believed that I could play the violin, my teacher thought that I was too hyperactive and even my mom attempted to convince me to quit.…

On Friday 24th October 2014, I went to see Frantic Assembly’s version of William Shakespeare’s ‘Othello’, directed by Scott Graham and Steven Hoggett. Frantic Assembly are a theatre company whose performances are primarily dominated by their unusual use of physical theatre to express emotions of characters and uncover hidden meanings within the play through the use of movement. The play was performed to an audience of mostly young adults and teenagers, perhaps because it had been reconceptualised, which possibly appeals to younger generations. Before the play began, there was a very clear and deliberately created atmosphere.…

On December 2nd, 2016 at the Constance theatre the dance department presented a show called Agbedidi. The show, directed and choreographed by Mohamed DaCosta and Trent D. Williams, Jr., displayed a combination of Traditional African and Contemporary Dance. The house buzzed with excitement as the start of the show approached. It is quite encouraged to see such a large audience at an event, but this audience also brought a positive, vibrant atmosphere for the dancers to soak up. I was curious to see what this year’s performance would look like.…

I have taken the class “Introduction of Theatre.” I was surprised that we all are required to do the creative project and presentation. The professor assigned every student to choose the topic relating to class materials and inspiring us as well. It was very hard to decide when I initially thought about it because there are many areas of theatre materials that are interesting. Throughout the whole paper, I would present the process and the significant reflection on creating the creative project and presentation.…

The Film shows many graphic and intense scenes but it portrays the correct image of what these students go through. The film also showed positive companionship through a mix of races and a need to succeed. It showed a great comparison between Anne Frank and the students and helped relate to them.…
