Before the war, Ellie and her friends were a group of normal and ordinary teenagers with quiet and peaceful lives, not having to worry if their next day would be their last. During the war, their lifestyle changed tremendously. Ellie and her friends were pushed into the unfamiliar situation of war, where survival was their number one priority. The changes in the character’s lifestyles can be highlighted in the novel when Ellie says; “We’ve all had to rewrite the scripts of our lives the last few weeks.” (P9). By this, Ellie shows and acknowledges how much their lifestyle has changed and how they have been forced to adapt to these changes. This type of change was present and was displayed notably by Homer Yannos. In the early stages of the novel, Homer was seen as a troublemaker and an untrustworthy person, as Ellie described Homer as “the guy that wasn’t even trusted to hand out the books at school.” (P62). However, when Homer’s lifestyle changed, because of the war, his personality becomes rapidly different. He began to assume a leadership role and was well respected by his peers. This is presented in the novel when Homer addresses his friends on what to do during the war. “We could end up with none. Everything’s a risk from now on Kev. We’re not going to be safe anywhere, any time, until this thing is over. All we can do is to keep calculating the odds. And if it goes on long enough we’ll be caught. But if we do nothing we’ll get caught even sooner. The biggest risk is to take no risk. Or to take crazy risks” (P66). This quote represents the change in Homer’s personality: that he was willing to take risks if it meant that he and his friends could survive. This was a major contrast in his personality, where before, he was seen as a troublemaker and menace to the group.
