Tomorrow, When the War Began, written by Australian author John Marsden is set in a small Australian town known as Wirrawee. The text displays the themes of war, change, friendship, leadership, growing-up, romance and courage. The novel tells a story of a group of teenagers who lives turn around, when they return from their camping trip from Hell. All eight of them need to step up in order to stay alive. The main themes highlighted in the chosen passage are friendship, romance and leadership. Corrie and Kevin are in love, Ellie and Lee find love in one another and Fi and Homer fall in love. Fi loves Homer dearly, as she started planning ahead for their future “so when [they get] married [she] can help him heaps and heaps”.

Together the girl’s friendship and thoughts are reflected on as they talk to each other about how much Homer has changed and their thought about their relationships. Ellie is embarrassed and confused. “[She] was embarrassed at how far Lee and [her] had progressed beyond [their] first kiss”. Ellie was confused, as she realised how much she did not know about Fi. Ellie taught that Fi would never be interested in someone like Homer. “If anyone had told [her] a year ago, or even a month ago, that this would happen, [Ellie] would have asked for their Medicare card”. On the other hand, Fi is in love and determined. She is in love as “a fire [was] burning inside [of] her” and she believes that Homer is a changed man. Fi is determined as she is trying to fit in with the group and she is prepared to do anything for her relationship with Homer. “[She wanted] to learn all [she could] about framing”. Ellie, Fi and even Homer are confused, helpless, changing and showing a great deal of leadership, but among all of this, they know what they want and that is
