Tomokazu Amo Letter

Decent Essays
It is my great pleasure to write this supporting letter for Dr. Tomokazu Amano’s application for an assistant professor position. Currently, I am the Principle Investigator (Title: Senior Research Fellow) in the MRC Centre for Reproductive Health, University of Edinburgh, UK. The interests of my laboratory are to understand the epigenetic reprogramming that occurs during the oocyte-to-zygote transition, pre-implantation stages and the establishment of totipotency/pluripotency.

I have known Tomokazu since I went to University of Connecticut in 2007 for my Ph.D.. Tomokazu is a true expert in the mouse embryology field because he had a great training record when he is in Japan, Canada, and US ( both Dr. Tsunoda and Dr. Nagy are the pioneer of

Stem Cell Assignment 1. Summary of “Your Inner Healers” New scientific discoveries have shown that adult mouse cells can be “rewound” to once again be pluripotent like they were in their former embryonic state by adding a mixture of genes to the cells (called induced Pluripotent Stem Cells, or iPSCs). This contradicts the natural progression of cells’ potency as they age: in their early formation, embryonic cells have the ability to mature into any one of the 220 types of human cells, and soon after that they begin to lose potency and are only multipotent — able to develop into just a few different types of cells, until finally they become terminally differentiated, and therefore unable to develop into any other types of cells.…

The procedure consists of taking the nucleus from the woman’s egg, inserted it into a donor’s egg, then fertilizing it with the husband’s sperm. This is a very controversial procedure that has been discussed for many years. The procedure is a great thing when wanting to help mothers who cannot have children because of a disease they may carry.…

In some ways Tan Heung Shan reminds me of our homeland along the Pearl River Delta, the climate and geography are not so different. Many other Chinese have come here from Kwangtung, so it is not as strange to live here as you might think. In this research article Morrison and Shaffer explain the process of a fertilized egg’s journey in ordinary biological reproduction. The main focus is after around six days of conception where the zygote’s nutrients begin to deplete. Thus, the hole that was created by the zygote releasing an enzyme is used as a pathway for the zygote to connect to the mother’s bloodstream by utilizing tendrils and around fourteen days the egg has implanted itself (Morrison & Shaffer). The egg does this in order to secrete hormones, as well as, other properties and protect itself from the mother’s immune system. The tendrils eventually form into the placenta in which allows only certain substances such as nutrients and oxygen into the egg.…

A shift of transcriptome (from maternal transcripts to zygotic transcripts: known as maternal-to-zygotic transition (MZT)) is known to occur during mammalian preimplantation development. A recent study showed that Xenopus oocyte mRNA methylation can regulate translation and cell division during meiosis and early embryo development. Therefore, m6A may possibly play a role in the process of MZT. Finally, the involvement of m6A in onset or progress of human diseases is still elusive. The possibility of this phenomenon in patient derived tissues should be proved in the near future based on experimental…

The increase of knowledge regarding the topic altering genes has become rapid and have open and paved the hope of designing your own perfect baby. Even today, the use of reforming and adjusting the genes of an unborn child is being put in effect. “Techniques of genetic screening are already being used, whereby embryos can be selected by sex and checked for certain disease-bearing genes. This can lead to either the termination of a pregnancy, or if analyzed at a pre-implantation stage when using In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), can enable the pregnancy to be created using only non-disease bearing genes” (Steere, 2011, para. 6). Altering the babies genes can not only harm the baby, however, can also terminate the baby.…

Simone Francis Reference number: 2167-6527 Epigenetics is the study of modifications to the genes of organisms. The way in which our genes behave can be altered by our epigenomes without changing our DNA sequence. They can be altered by different factors of our environment such as what we eat, drink, etc. The video on epigenetics was very informative. Prior to watching the video, I had no knowledge of what epigenetics was nor have I ever heard about it.…
