Sells was working as a used car salesmen when he met the Harris’s. Terry and Crystal Harris, their son and two daughters. Sells would befriend Terry, and often visited their home in search of counseling for his marital problems. The night of the murder Tommy was having a drink with Terry who was leaving to help a family friend move from Kanas. Once the bar closed, Tommy made his way to the home of Terry. Sells knew that Mrs. Harris and there 2 daughters were home alone. What Tommy didn’t know was that the friend of one the daughters was staying over, 10 year old Krystal Surles. Sells first tried to enter the house through a side door. Finding no success he managed to get into the house through the window. Quietly Sells stalks through the home and begins to choose who if not all of those asleep would be his next victim. In an interview with the police Tommy states that he stopped and looked into the room of the older sister and just watched her for a while. Finally he moved further down the hallway and spotted the 13 year old Katy Harris in the bottom bed of her bunk bed.
