25 October 2015 “The Luck of Roaring Camp” by Bret Harte is a short story that takes place during the gold rush in the mid 1800s in Roaring Camp, California. Cherokee Sal, a prostitute, dies shortly after giving birth to an infant boy leaving him without anyone to take care of him. The men in the camp, wanting the best for the child, join together to make the failing town into a suitable place for him. This story has the literary elements of life, renewal, and death. The theme of life is shown multiple times throughout this short story. The first example of this being the birth of the child. Besides Cherokee Sal and the other 100 men in Roaring Camp there were no other inhabitants of this town. The town was completely void of all life and activity. That was until the child was born. The first of the improvements were made in the cabin of Tommy Luck. The men decorated the cabin by painting it white, planted flowers around it and kept it clean.Tuttle's store, where the men used to meet to talk and gamble, also went through a renewal. The men seeing themselves in Tuttle's mirrors began to care more about their hygiene. Stumpy, the self proclaimed guardian of Tommy Luck, made a new law for the camp. Anyone who wanted to hold Tommy would have to wash daily. The shouting and yelling that had given the camp its name also stopped. Tommy needed to sleep, and soon everyone walked around speaking in whispers. Instead of the regular shouting that filled the town, the music of songs filled the air. Tommy was eventually carried up the mountain to the place where the men were digging for gold. With the gold they found in the mountains the residents of Roaring Camp sought to better their town . The men voted to build a hotel with the riches they had unearthed with hopes of some good families with children would be attracted to town and come to live in Roaring
