Case Study Assignment // Tommy Bahama
Diagnosing the Learning Situation
Learner characteristics Tommy Bahama, after recently moving to Anchorage from the Big Island of Hawaii, is struggling to enjoy the snowy season because he misses surfing every day back home. He has been placed in my snowboarding class by his mom as an attempt to help Tommy feel more at home here in Alaska, as well as learn a new skill that is similar to surfing. His favorite pastime in Hawaii was surfing, and he has been showing signs of depression about not being able to surf any longer. Despite his quick adjustment to the cold weather, Tommy still cannot fully get on board with snowboarding, and this is evidenced by his need to show everyone around him, including me as the instructor, YouTube clips of his surfing skills. He needs an outlet for his sadness over missing surfing, as well as a sport he can learn to embrace that will keep his spirits high during the dark winter months. When I had Tommy first try snowboarding, he had a difficult time making turns and seemed wobbly as he realized that the slope felt much different than a wave of water under his board. First I would plan to sit down with Tommy, and go over the specific goals I have picked out with him, to include him in the planning process. Then, I would talk to him about the transfer of learning, and how his skills in surfing can help him be successful in snowboarding if he decides to work hard at this new sport. The goal of including him in the initial practice planning is to help spark some motivation for learning to snowboard, despite his depression over missing
