1.3 Racial Diversity It would be completely incorrect to assume that the problem with female representation has been resolved. One cannot be supportive of feminism if it is only seen in one dominant ethnicity. The casual racism that often appears on the Hollywood screen is not only politically incorrect but also unsupportive of female empowerment.…

The ideals and standards that media expose to the public tell a number of women that they do not fit in this altering spectrum. 3. PURPOSE a. The purpose of Mindy’s narrative is to educate her audience on how the filming industry and Hollywood portrays woman and set high standards and expectations to satisfy the male character. This illustrates one of the main themes known as ‘male dominance’ that is portrayed throughout her narrative. This theme is evident as Mindy describes each archetype; she ends each anecdote with each woman satisfying and being loved by a male character, despite any flaws or struggle that she may present.…

The documentary also provides many supporting statistics to help support their claim regarding how the media affects women of all ages. “Miss Representation” successfully educates the viewer on many different studies that have been conducted for a variety of various aspects and scenarios of a women’s life. One study shows that women in the U.S spend an average of $12,000 to $15,000 on beauty products and services rather than on their education. Traditionally, femininity is associated with a particular set of personality traits and behaviours, which are deemed acceptable for women to perform by the most influential institutions of the dominant culture. The teen makeover movie is a visual medium that reinforces these expectations through the types of female characters they present. Gender stereotypes reveal a distinct correlation between performances of idealized femininity and the distribution of female power in their high school community. Heathers (1988), Clueless (1995), and Mean Girls (2004), despite having been released decades apart from one another, use similar makeover tropes to reveal trends in the use of makeover transformation that demonstrate how idealized vision of femininity…

The hypersexualization of women has created a societal norm that women are objects of desire for men to obtain and creates an unachievable standard of beauty for women to constantly strive. By disseminating this idea the media outlets have successfully kept a majority of women focused more on their physical appearance than any their part of their existence. This ensures that women are not focused on achieving positions of power and ensures those positions are held by the white, heterosexual, old males for another generation. It has also become readily apparent that women need more strong on-screen female role models to encourage them to strive for those positions of power in society. The lack of female filmmakers is largely…
Our perceptions and ideals of gender are shaped by the popular culture that we consume. It is argued that the repetition of binary gender roles and stereotypes within film and media can carry significant real world consequences, as people imitate them in their own lives (Holtzman & Sharpe 2014). There are many differences in the ways that men and women are represented in film and media, and the quantitative and qualitative data from our group study has re-affirmed that gender inequality still remains strongly imbedded within film. We analysed 10 American top box office trailers, and found that 55% of the actors were male and 45% were female. This isn 't a huge disparity in itself, but of the 45% of females who appeared, only 35% had…
