Tom Weylin: Quotes Analysis

Decent Essays
This quote is referring to Tom Weylin. Dana makes this observation after Rufus tells her that he would not whip her for something Rufus told her to do. In the antebellum south it is important to remember that Dana not a superior to Rufus. She is expected to obey and be submissive to Rufus orders. Dana later does not agree with the generalization of Rufus’s father but realizes in the context of the antebellum south Tom Weylin could be a worse man. She also realizes that he is practicing what society said “were legal and proper.” This quote is important because we must decide after several instances whether Tom is an awful person or could be worse.

In my opinion I do not believe Rufus’s father is not that bad. He whips the slaves as a punishment

He knows that what he does is wrong, but he also knows that if he ever left them, his slaves would be sold to another slave owner who would not have a hint of compassion or remorse towards his slaves. That is where the theme of love begins. As Dana is living through this slavery period, she is experiencing so many different emotions, but the one that keeps her strong is love; the love for her family and the love for the slaves she’s with to help them reach freedom. She has this love/hate relationship with Rufus. She does everything in her power to keep him alive because she knows without him, she would be nonexistent and would not have her present-day life with her husband.…

The moral dilemma that Dana faces is that should she kill Rufus or should she just keep him alive. If Dana were to keep Rufus alive her life could be in danger. On the other hand if she were to kill him she could be safe there and not have the fear of Rufus sexually abusing her. Assuming that Dana kills Rufus and saves her own life, she would put all the slaves that are on Rufus’s plantation in danger. The slaves would be separated from their families and children will be separated from their parents.…

In Kindred, Rufus doesn’t really care about how all his slaves and Dana feel as long as he is happy and content with his life. One example is when Rufus falls in love with Alice and takes her away from her husband and begins raping her. Dana realizes “that he loved the woman - to her misfortune. There was no shame in raping a black woman, but there could be shame in loving one.” (Butler 124).…

My favorite quote was by Scott Woods. A close second was Desmond Tutu’s, followed by Samuel L. Jackson’s. a. In Scott Woods’ quote, he dismantling the idea that racism is only “big R racism,” meaning that racism is only grand, hateful actions like the lynching of black people by KKK. Woods is saying that racism is not solely these incredibly hateful acts of violence, but racism persists through the institutions and systems created by the country.…

However, as Rufus grows up, he became like his father and other slave owners as he used punishment and manipulation methods to maintain power. This is extremely important because the reader should not feel that Rufus is a caring slave owner or that he is different from other slave owners and treated his slaves better The reader should not be angered or surprised by Rufus’ actions because, unfortunately, Rufus is a product of his environment. Slave owners and society in general, during this time period in history, were truly inhuman to slaves and never gave them the respect they deserved as human…

Quotes that resonate with me are ones that are powerful and really make me think. When Maria Teresa is young, she writes in her little book, “Minerva says a soul is like a deep longing in you that you can never fill up, but you try. This is why there are stirring poems and brave heroes who die for what is right” (3,31). In this quote she is saying how you can always reach your goals and do something good, but there will always be something better. This resonates with me, because no matter what I do I always feel like I need to do more.…

This passage reflects the book as a whole because it shows the brutality of slavery. This reflects the book because in every chapter Douglass writes about the various strategies that slave owners used to keep the slaves in line, whether that be psychological or physical torture. Throughout the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, Douglass reminds the reader repeatedly how terrible slavery is and the decisions it forces humans to make. The scene that Douglass depicts also reflects that slave owners like to make examples out of slaves. By whipping Frederick’s Aunt, the slave master instills fear in the other slaves and that fear prevents them from stepping out of line.…

The Status Quo Change is followed by fear. Depending on how a person handles this fear they will either succumb to violence or passivity. It is a rare portion of the population that will face their fears head on with courage. In the story Simon vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda written by Becky Albertalli such courage is exemplified by the character Simon. In the book when Simon said he was “tired of coming out” (Albertalli, 40).…
